Week 4: Wed PTH Section 6- Piping Offsets
Piping Offsets require a specialized application of trigonometry. The application in piping is simplified by the fact that we mostly use only a few angles, 22-1/2, 30, 45, and 60 with 45 being the most common angle of fittings. In the case of 45 it is easy to remember the necessary constants, 1.414 and .707.
But if you remember 1.414 solve most of the offset related calculations.
Continue with the WHMIS GHS assignment and watch for the labels on all products you use. What type of information should you expect on a label.

Week 3, Wed: Pipe 0001 -- More Code Introduction
We started an overview of the code book just reading through to see what is there and the kind of language used.
For Pipe 0001 we will focus mostly on the first parts of the code, especially the definitions which are found in Division A, Section 1.4 and the Division B, Section 2.2 Materials and Equipment.
Today we continued a read through of the Code book for orientation purposes.
We continued with Pipe Trades Handbook Section 5: Gasketed Joints. Information about tools and materials is starting to come together from a few directions, code, PT handbook, math modules and drafting.

Week Two, Monday, Applied Math
Started Applied Math on Monday. The calendar has been added to the sidebar of this blog FYI.
Reviewed some videos from Khan Academy, fabulous resource for many of the subjects of this class. Great way to review working with fractions or trig. (Think SOH CAH TOA)
Assigned Units 7, 8, 9 and 10 of Mathematics for Plumbers and Pipefitters, answer questions in Google Forms.
We also viewed a few YouTube videos on the subject of fitting allowances , for example this video from Camosun college.
Week One of Tools and Materials Theory
We started the week off with an orientation to the program and a review of the course curriculum.
Everyone developed Google accounts and got set up to use Blogger as an electronic portfolio for their work. Everyone learned to use the various editing tools and figured out how to upload videos to YouTube and then embed the video on their blog. All practical projects will be supported by an entry in the individual blogs and assessment will be based on this documentation.
Students were introduced to the fittings identification system used in the piping trades, where all fittings are identified by size, connection method, material and function.
We then went on to begin with the Pipe Trades Handbook, one of the main resources for the course. Assignments were completed on Section One: Pipe Data and Section 2: Tubing Data.
We spent some time on Tools and Materials practical in particular learning to tie the boline knot and the related truckers hitch.
